BAGHDAD, Iraq — After nearly three months in captivity in Iraq, American reporter Jill Carroll was set free Thursday.

Carroll, who was a freelancer for the Christian Science Monitor at the time of her kidnapping, apparently was left in the street near the Iraqi Islamic Party offices in Al Ameriya just west of Baghdad. She walked inside, and people there called American officials.

Well, thank goodness she's safe. This is certainly good news. But... I wonder? Will this get as much coverage as the latest car bomb?

Afghan Christian in Italy.

ROME — The Afghan man who faced the death penalty for converting from Islam to Christianity received asylum in Italy Wednesday, despite requests by lawmakers in Afghanistan that he be barred from fleeing the conservative Muslim country.

Abdul Rahman arrived in Rome days after he was freed from a high-security prison on the outskirts of Kabul after a court dropped charges of apostasy against him for lack of evidence and suspected mental illness.

Thank God he's safe now. I'm glad the whole ordeal is over for this poor man. I hope that the world-wide attention this received will discourage the Afghan government from future persecution of Christians.

This kind of thing is what makes me very, very grateful and proud to be an American.

Susan Sarandon to portray Cindy Sheehan.

"After [Cindy Sheehan] stops for protests in New Orleans and Washington, D.C., she will breakfast in Manhattan with actress Susan Sarandon, who is set to portray her in a biopic movie. A crew will film Sheehan for a weekly reality series on the Sundance Channel. Her letters to President Bush inspired 'Peace Mom,' a one-woman monologue show in London. A memoir is due to her publisher April 1."

And you know what I don't see? Book deals to tell Casey Sheehan's story. Movies about Casey Sheehan. Or a monologue about a Soldier who gave his life for his Country. That's what I don't see.

Afghan Man Faces Death for Allegedly Converting to Christianity.

"KABUL, Afghanistan — An Afghan man who allegedly converted from Islam to Christianity is being prosecuted in a Kabul court and could be sentenced to death, a judge said Sunday.

The defendant, Abdul Rahman, was arrested last month after his family went to the police and accused him of becoming a Christian.

Afghanistan's constitution is based on Shariah law, which states that any Muslim who rejects their religion should be sentenced to death.

'We are not against any particular religion in the world. But in Afghanistan, this sort of thing is against the law,' the judge said. 'It is an attack on Islam. ... The prosecutor is asking for the death penalty.'

[The prosecutor, Abdul Wasi] said that he had offered to drop the charges if Rahman changed his religion back to Islam, but the defendant refused."

President Bush, where are you? Come on now, Afghanistan is a shining example of a nation freed from religious ideology. Don't let it go back to the way it was. At least say something. Please.

Jessica Simpson Snubs Bush, really, who cares? I'd personally be a little worried it she was a Republican. Do we really want someone of that intelligence level on our side? And good grief, why should we worry if she "snubs" Bush? There are a lot of pressing problems to deal with; Iraq, Iran, not to mention growing Political problems, and we're worried about Jessica Simpson? Seems a little mixed up to me.

Cindy Sheehan arrested...again.

Much as I resent the fact that the media worships anyone who speaks out against President Bush, I've been really amused how the media has handled Cindy Sheehan. First she was all I ever heard about. Then she started being herself and it's like she never existed. That being said, I am getting more and more irritated each time she refers to the President as a "criminal."

I knew California was a little loony...

'Mom,' 'dad' to be axed from school textbooks? From World Net Daily. (emphasis mine)

A traditional-values organization in California is warning the state's residents that a bill pending in the Legislature, if approved, could remove all references to gender in public schools – threatening even references to "mom" or "dad" in textbooks.

If the bill, SB 1437, were to become law, warns the Capitol Resource Institute, "it could potentially require gender-neutral bathrooms in our schools and all references to 'husband' and 'wife' or 'mom and dad' removed from school textbooks as the norm."

Sponsored by Democratic Sen. Sheila Kuehl...the legislation would add "gender" (actual or perceived) and "sexual orientation" to the law that prohibits California public schools from having textbooks, teaching materials, instruction or "school-sponsored activities" that reflect adversely upon people based on characteristics like race, creed and handicap.

I don't know what to add. I guess there's nothing to add. Gender neutral bathrooms? I'm just sort of baffled right now.

Dubai Company to Give Up Stake in U.S. Ports Deal

WASHINGTON — After Republican leaders warned President Bush that the House and Senate appeared ready to block Dubai Ports World from taking over some U.S. port terminal operations, the company said it would give up its management stake in the deal.

This is, in my opinion, a victory for national security, but also for Republicans. Read this next paragraph:

The Thursday announcement was a blow for Democrats, who were pushing for a Senate vote on an amendment that would halt the deal. If they succeeded in that vote, Democrats could then claim a big election year win in the area of national security — an area Republicans generally have a stronger track record on.

Yes, that's what I was also worried about. Democrats really, really need something to make them look good on issues of national security. They're desperate for it. Why would we want to give them what they want?

VIENNA, Austria — Iran threatened the United States with "harm and pain" Wednesday for its role in hauling Tehran before the U.N. Security Council over its nuclear program and for plans to push fellow council members to impose tough measures against the Islamic republic.

Oh, my. But I'm sure the U.N. will handle this just perfectly. They always do. Seriously, now, I do hope something happens. I'm not suggesting military action now. I don't know what should be done. It's crazy. Well, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is crazy. I just hope the world realizes that.

Gov. Rounds Signs Bill Banning Most S.D. Abortions

"SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Gov. Mike Rounds signed legislation Monday banning nearly all abortions in South Dakota, setting up a court fight aimed at challenging the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion.

The bill would make it a crime for doctors to perform an abortion unless the procedure was necessary to save the woman's life.

The Legislature passed the bill last month after supporters argued that the recent appointment of conservative justices John Roberts and Samuel Alito have made the U.S. Supreme Court more likely to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Under the new law, doctors could get up to five years in prison for performing an illegal abortion."

Yes! This could be very good if Roberts and Alito turn out to be solid Conservatives. What do you guys think of the bill and what it could lead to? I think that probably the farthest it could go is outlawing abortions in some states, but that's certainly better than abortion on demand everywhere.

Planned Parenthood is already planning a lawsuit, showing their true anti-life feelings. Are they really concerned about the health of women? The law gives exception if the mother's life is in danger. Why are they so eager to get babies killed?

Study: Few Americans know 1st Amendment

CHICAGO -- Americans apparently know more about "The Simpsons" than they do about the First Amendment.

Only one in four Americans can name more than one of the five freedoms guaranteed by the First Amendment (freedom of speech, religion, press, assembly and petition for redress of grievances.) But more than half can name at least two members of the cartoon family, according to a survey.

The study by the new McCormick Tribune Freedom Museum found that 22 percent of Americans could name all five Simpson family members, compared with just one in 1,000 people who could name all five First Amendment freedoms.
